Cognitive Development Case Study Analysis

1. From the perspective of Piaget's theory, in which stage of cognitive development is Laura? Justify your response.
- From the text I would put Laura in between the Preoperational and Concrete stages of development. Laura clearly has formed certain opinions about the world that she lives in, however, some of her justification is not rationally sought after. Laura has a difficult time conceptualizing time and making sure that she is fulfilling all of her responsibilities as a student. Secondly, Laura was able to think abstractly when put on the spot in her Debate class, she was able to come up with a sound argument against her teacher and form opinions behind it.

2. How is Laura's reasoning affected by her knowledge base--that is, by what she does and doesn't know about pollution? Use terminology from Ch. 3 in your response.
-Laura has not been exposed to the world as her teacher has, she has yet to learn about scientifically proven facts that cement logical reasoning. The teacher is using scaffolding here, guiding her and directing her with probing questions and giving her the opportunity to develop an opinion. As a fourteen year old, she would either be taking Biology or Earth Systems at the junior high, the teachers can only delve so far into the concept of pollution. Most adolescents that are involved in Science at this level just have a basic understanding of the knowledge that is being presented.

3. By posing a series of questions, Mr. Marculescu continually challenges Laura to reconsider her thinking about the pollution problem. What are potential benefits of this strategy? Use terminology from Piaget's and Vygotsky's theories in your response.
- Both of Piaget's and Vygotsky's theories are applicable here. The teacher is presenting the opportunity for Laura to think and develop a clearer response from his probing questions. By asking her more questions especially one's where she can visualize the eventual outcome, Laura can rationally think through the debate and make sure that her responses are appropriate and are subject based.

4. How does this scenario represent Piaget's and Vygotsky's conceptions of play?
-The teacher is allowing the student to learn in an environment that is conducive to her age, Laura is able to complete certain tasks to the point where it does not pressure her in a way that feels like she is being tested. The acting out of the debate allows for her to grow and develop an opinion that is related to the "pretend debate" being portrayed in the classroom.
